State University of Bangladesh observed Seminar on HIV/AIDS

The Department of Public Health, State University of Bangladesh and UNFPA has jointly organized a seminar on “Young Leadership: Preventing HIV/AIDS” on Monday, 3rd December, 2007 at the auditorium of the University. The Seminar was organized as a part of the 3-days’ celebration of “World AIDS Day 2007” highlighting the theme (Take the lead - Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise). The Seminar was chaired by the honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. M.S. Ilyas Dhami; Ms Tahera Ahmed, Assistant Country Representative; UNFPA was present as the Chief Guest
In her speech, the chief guest Ms Tahera Ahmed asked the young generation to come forward and to take the lead in preventing this deadly disease. She emphasized that students have to be very careful and responsible in their behaviours. A lot of people are not aware of the mode of infection. We should break the myths and misconceptions about the mode of getting infected with HIV.
Prof. M.S. Ilyas Dhami in his speech shared his international experience on HIV/AIDS issue and involvement of young leadership through pragmatic approach.
A lively discussion also commemorated the theme. Students were inquisitive regarding prevalence, risk factors, diagnostic aspects, strategies to prevention and leadership issues. Dr Rebeka Sultana from the UNFPA, present in the audience, also responded to the questions along with the Chief Guest and the Chair.
Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M. Shahjahan, Advisor, School of Health Sciences of the State University of Bangladesh has enriched the Seminar very much by his valuable presentation and offered vote of thanks.
Dr. Nawzia Yasmin, Acting Head of the Department of Public Health and Academic Program Director of MPH Programme SUB delivered Welcome Speech.
The program ended with refreshment and prize distribution among students who took part in the World AIDS Day quiz and essay competition.
