Shamsuddin Ahmed read the keynote paper on the achievements and failures of the WSSD in which he mentioned that it was too early to make any comment on the impact on the future of mankind of the decisions taken at the WSSD. It was also mentioned in the keynote paper that such decisions as halving the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015 to underpin the Millennium Development Goals on water and health, global programme of actions on sanitation and safe water provision, commitment to integrated management of water resources, increase “urgently and substantially” the share of renewable energy in total energy supply, diversification of energy supply through cleaner and more advance technologies, phasing out unsustainable energy subsidies, and decisions made to minimize by 2020 significant adverse effects of chemicals on human health and environment would have their positive impact on the future of mankind. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman in his speech defined development as a concept that consists of a huge number of elements, like: education, economic condition, water & sanitation, growth rate of population, poverty alleviation, health, energy, biodiversity and human dignity. “Neither the government nor any single entity can break out of the poverty cycle. For achieving sustainable development we need social mobilization”, he said emphatically. He further said that the literacy rate in Bangladesh has reached a commendable height along with an appreciably reduced rate of increase in population. He further observed that the country was also being run under a democratic system and there had been three democratically acceptable elections and as many peaceful transitions of power from one government to the other since 1991, which were signs that democracy was taking root in our country. Dr. A.Q. Khan appealed to the students of SUB and the young generation as a whole to develop a firm commitment to serve mankind better by developing more commitment to protect the environment. “ Development must be homegrown, not imposed, and if we want to develop our country we must look at our problems from our points of view and not from that of others”, said Dr. Khan, a late septuagenarian physician who spends his retired life reading, writing books and distributing them free to those who need them. Dr. Mahbubur Rahman announced that SUB would hold seminars on current issues regularly on its campus. State University of Bangladesh (SUB)
