Physiotherapy is the health profession which emphasizes the use of physical approach for the prevention and treatment of disease and disability. This is a patient/client -centred profession which aims at optimizing quality of life. This includes promotion of a healthy life style, prevention of illness and injury for those at risk and rehabilitation following injury or impairment of function (disability). Physiotherapists are trained to assess clients and to use skilled manual techniques, exercise therapy and electrotherapy to reduce pain, promote healing and improve function. The approach to management include, counseling, which empowers the patient/client to improve his or her quality of life. Service is offered to clients of all ages with conditions such as headaches, bronchitis, asthma, cerebral palsy, stokes, fractured bones, stiff joints, sports injuries and painful necks and backs.

COURSE PHILOSOPHY, AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Physiotherapy is a health care profession whose practitioners work in hospitals, clinics, nursing, homes and private practice. Physiotherapy practitioners work with patients who are disabled by illness or accident or were borne with a congenital disability, they evaluate neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, sensorimotor and related cardiovascular and respiratory functions of the patient. Evaluation includes performing and interpreting tests to assist in to determine the degree of impairment of relevant aspects such as muscle strength, motor development, functional capacity or respiratory and circulatory efficiency. Evaluation provides the basis for the selection of appropriate therapeutic procedure and evaluation of results of treatment. Physiotherapy practitioners plan and implement initial and subsequent treatment programs on the basis of test findings and within the referral of the licensed physician or with whom they maintain contact regarding the care of the patient. The treatment given by physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants include exercises for increasing strength, endurance, coordination and range of motion; stimuli to facilitate motor activity and learning; instruction in activities of daily living and the use of assertive devises and the application of physical agents such as heat, cold, electricity and water, motivate and instruct the patient, his/ her family and others who might help him through his treatment and convalescent period. The overall goal of this program is to produce a graduate physiotherapist who is a competent, reflective practitioner aware of the needs of the whole community. The graduate will be able to fulfil the role of health and disability educator and researcher, in addition to the role of therapist.

The overall objectives of the program are to:

Graduate physiotherapists with advanced knowledge and skills in different areas of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
2.
Improve the quality of physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices and services in Bangladesh.
3.
Promote the utilization of applied research to develop local capacity for planning and policy development and management of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
4.
Develop national, regional and international cooperation and collaboration among institution, groups and individuals known to be actively in developing and practicing physiotherapy and rehabilitation

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
* Minimum CGPA 4 up to HSC/Equivalent
*Atleast 2nd division in SSC & HSC (Science)
*O-level: 5 courses with minimum CPA 2.0
*A-level: 2 courses with minimum CPA 2.0
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
* Credit Hours to be Completed: 150
* Minimum CGPA to Pass: 2.5
THE CURRICULUM

The course is of four years duration. After completion of this course the University will awards a degree of Bachelor of Science Physiotherapy. The primary focus of the course is to provide an integrated curriculum that combines didactic and clinical study to prepare students for the practice of physiotherapy. The curriculum is based on a broad foundation of science and humanities, which help the students, develop tools and values necessary for the challenges that they will face as clinical practitioners, teachers, researchers and consultants. Highly qualified and experienced in-house faculty and guest faculty provides instructions in the subjects mentioned in the curriculum. Furthermore, specialists from home and abroad will be invited to conduct workshops and courses thus, enriching the student's educational experience.

Course curriculum and syllabus of the BSc PT program of the State University of Bangladesh saturates the need of the profession as a graduate Physiotherapist at home as well as at international level. The curriculum aims to prepare quality Physiotherapist with self-confidence and self-dignity. The program comprises Foundation courses & Core courses. Every course of the program will have a course code for easy identification and quick reference.

There will be options for credit transfer between other universities in the country or abroad.

Credit

The curriculum has been designed to be of credit based and semester system for equivalency with other international academic institutions. Students have to attend 12.75 lecture hours to complete a 01credit course. Again one laboratory period of 03 hours is equivalent to 01 lecture. Examination period is included within this period. There will be options for challenge.

Semester

State University of Bangladesh distributes the courses in 03 equal semesters per year- Summer, Fall, Spring. Every semester is of 04 months duration.

Course Duration

Students will need 4 academic years to complete at least 150 credits course in 12 semesters.
