Agriculture is now considered a national thrust sector. Agriculture still accounts for 30% of GDP, while employing 63% of total labour force. In order to stimulate agricultural diversification, it is necessary to develop the agro-processing sector in its proper prospective. While there is scope for expanding and modernizing the agro-processing sector, this sector faces constraints of limited exposure to modern technology and agricultural methods, credit availability, effective domestic demand and export market development.
Agro-processing particularly food processing industries provide the most favorable stimulus for the manufacturing sector, its growth implies expansion of all activities that supply input to it particularly raw materials. Parallel improvement in infrastructure, transportation, storage and marketing are prerequisite for expanding it. Agro-industrial complexes with integration of food processing industries and agriculture could provide industries' support for proper agricultural, development.
For proper agricultural development and promotion of food processing industries, qualified and trained manpower is required. With this end in view the State University of Bangladesh has embarked upon a ambitious plan to establish and develop a department of Food Science & Technology at its own campus. It is now being manned by senior most qualified food technologist of the country supported by brilliant young technologists, engineers and biochemists. |
